Why do cats purr? Short answer

Cats purr to communicate – Kittens will often purr to communicate with their mothers and so some scientists have suggested that when cats purr at us they may be replicating this behaviour. A purr can mean many things, however. Often it implies that a cat is happy or satisfied, though this naturally varies between cats. Some cats will growl or produce especially low purrs to signal discontent. A high-pitched screech, on the other hand, is usually produced when cats are fighting
